Dan Morris

Hi. I’m Dan, owner of Cotswolds Wedding Photography. Like a lot of people, I fell into wedding photography by pure accident. I was a drunken guest at a friend’s wedding, camera in one hand and a beer in the other – Uncle Dan Bob. I posted a few pics on Facebook and next thing you know I’m a wedding photographer.

It soon became an obsession. I was an Engineer for the British Railways and I’d watch YouTube videos all day long instead of doing any work.

I’ve always enjoyed people and socialising. Being from Wales I was brought up in a rugby club and had no choice but to chat with people. This has certainly helped me during weddings and getting to know couples, families and guests. My personality is very laid back and wedding photography is the only thing that I take seriously in life.

I started off with a Nikon camera purely because the lecturer at the college that I’d signed up for was talking in Nikon. At the time she may as well have been speaking in Klingon, that’s how much I knew about photography. It was a one night a week super basic camera course.

I also consider myself a Destination wedding photographer. Having photographed weddings in 15 countries and now continents. That’s how I became interested in street photography.

Since then street photography has become another big interest of mine. It has certainly had an impact on my wedding photography and is great training for the eye and patience.

I use smaller mirrorless cameras. Fuji, Sony and Ricoh. I’m really not loyal to any camera company :)

Cameras

Nikon D850 x2 –  Built like a tank, very good image quality and very trustworthy.

Fujifilm X100V – The sexiest camera out there. Looks great and packs a punch, great fixed 23mm, 35mm (full frame equivalent) lens and handy flip screen.

Ricoh GR III – Super small and discreet. The files are great too considering the size of the camera. Fixed 28mm full frame lens.

Lenses

Nikon 24mm f/1.4G – Mainly comes out for the dancing or if I need that extra room. Focussing in low light is decent.

Nikon 35mm f/1.4G – My go to lens. Solid performance and very well made. Great lens and my favourite focal length.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4G – A great portrait lens and my next favourite after the 35mm.

Lights and Triggers

Godox XPro N – Very reliable triggers and never miss a beat. I use them with the Godox AD 200. Great powerful flashes that recycle super quick. Perfect for the dancing.

Bags/Straps

I use the Holdfast system. It’s all about looking cool, right? A great conversation starter. Plus they suit the way I work well.

For home weddings, I use the Lowepro Pro Tactic 450 AW and for destination weddings, I use the Lowepro Photostream Roller 150.

Hardware & Software

G – Technology G Drive mobile SSD 1TB x3 – A great little hard drive that I can trust.

MacBook Pro 15” Laptop – Perfect for on the go travel.

Adobe Lightroom – Does everything that I need for my editing apart from sharpening and some cloning. For that I use Photoshop.

Photo Mechanic – I know lots just use Lightroom now as it can be equally fast but PM for me is still favoured.

Presets – I made my own. I like vibrant and colourful images.

Misc.

H2O – Most important.

Tip – Always take a photo of the bride and grooms canapés and don’t assume they’ve been offered to you and scoff the lot!
