Beth Mitchell

My name is Beth Mitchell and I am an Australian Underwater Fine Art Photographer. I love working with my subjects to create whimsical scenes entirely under the surface.

From the start, I gravitated to Nikon. I found it visually dignified and after I first invested in a Nikon D80, I haven’t looked back. Now I have a Nikon D810 and it has served me well from its initial release.

Cameras

Nikon D810 with Ikelite underwater housing. These are the cases you see divers use. They are specifically designed for individual camera models.

Lenses

Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 – This is my main choice of lens due to its diverse range. Most of the work I shoot is fully sunlit therefore this guy is great. The dome pictured on the Ikelite case is specifically designed to accommodate the length and functionality of this lens. It is best for large underwater sets.

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G – Great for up-close work with minimal movement. I use this lens for small tank setups.

Hardware & Software

Adobe Photoshop with RAW processing. Raw is integral for my processes as a lot of the fundamental direction starts here. I need to also preserve as much detail in my images because they are all designed for fine art print.

My Photoshop skills have grown over the years. What started as ‘loudly’ edited imagery has now moved into a hopefully more seamless editing style. My goal is always so the work balances looking like a painting and a photograph.

Photography is a medium I love seeing represented strongly in the world of fine art. It is my opportunity to share social messages in the form of visual art, both for enjoyment and storytelling.
