How Big is a 4×6 photo?

A short guide to the actual size of a 4x6 photo, the most commonly used photo print size in 2023. Learn the correct measurements in inches, cm, mm and pixels.

4×6 prints are approximately 4 inches by 6 inches, or 4″ x  5 ⅞” (10 x 15cm / 101.6 x 152.4 mm).

This is a standard photo print size since it mirrors the aspect ratio of the viewfinder of most digital cameras.

The common exception is when you take photos with a smartphone which is a different shape to a 4×6 photo.

This means that when you use an iPhone or Android camera, your photo has to be cut off (‘cropped’) to make it fit on a 4×6 print – handy to know if you’re putting the photo in a standard size picture frame.

What size is 4×6 in Pixels?

At 125 pixels per inch, a 4×6 photo is 500 x 750 pixels.

At 300 pixels per inch, a 4×6 photo is 1200 x 1800 pixels.

What is the Aspect Ratio of a 4×6 Photo?

A photo’s shape is technically known as an aspect ratio or ratio.

The aspect ratio of a 4×6 photo is 3:2, whereas the ratio of a photo taken with your smartphone is likely to be 4:3. See our article on 4:3 vs 16:9 for more clarification on this.

Pro Tip: How to avoid faces being cut off from the edges of your photos

Nearly all photo printers cut off an additional 3mm (approximately 0.12″) from around the outside of your image.

Unfortunately, most photo printing services don’t tell you about this when you upload your photos.

Just make sure that faces and other important objects aren’t close to the edges of your photo when you’re taking a shot, or choose an alternate crop to ensure nothing is cut off.

If you’re not afraid to crop and need a larger print size, see our guide: how big is a 5×7 photo?
