Ara Guler
Vivian Maier (i believe she must have a very special place in the history of photography since she was never called a photographer, cause she had no fancy purposes such as telling a story to the world like the others, so that she had a very special chance to keep her name but just her name without any titles like Photographer, Journalist etc…)

I lately discovered your website and regretting not to know it way earlier, awesome!!!

Really great list including a lot of photographers I’m not familiar with. I’ll offer a few who influenced me greatly, and one who definitely needs to be near the top of any list including portrait photographers.

Yousuf Karsh is among the greatest portrait photographers to point a camera at a subject. His control of light and texture is unparalleled and his ability to find the gravitas of his subjects remarkable.

Aaron Siskind and Lennart Olson informed my sense of compositional form in abstract fine art photography. Olson, particularly, with his high contrast graphical lyricism in urban environments while Siskind’s found form, harmony and beauty in broken-down urban environments, transforming them and our experience of these spaces.

Man Ray really needs to be here, too, for his iconic photographic surrealism and ground-breaking expieriments with photographic technique.

The 2 that inspire my personal photography the most are William Eggleston & Daido Moriyama…
I have always believed Sebastiao Salgado’s work is on a different level.
James Nachtwey, Trent Parke, Alex Webb, Garry Winogrand, Martin Parr, Saul Leiter, all legends of their field.

No W. Eugene Smith in a list of photographers who shook the world! A huge omission. See — Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath (1971) — a woman in a Japanese tub cradling her daughter, a child severely deformed by corporate mercury poisoning. The power of this image — not to mention the body of work — truly corresponds to the category of having shaken the world.

However, I don’t see Irving Penn mentioned here. He certainly cannot be left out of any conversation of Famous and/or Great Photographers.
