5 Benefits of getting Featured on Wedding Blogs
Submitting your photography to wedding websites is an essential step in the promotion of your brand.
It may seem like a chore, but getting your photography featured on the websites listed here has 5 main benefits that’ll make your time spent on the submission more than worthwhile.
1. Exposure
Check out the traffic figures in the table of the best wedding blogs below. Within that number are many potential brides who may be seeing your work for the very first time.
Getting featured on a popular wedding site will put your photography in front of the eyes balls of a whole new audience, which may in turn lead to new bookings.
Check out Wedding Maps, which is a great example of how a bride and groom could stumble across your work, simply from being listed in the directory.
2. Traffic
When one of your weddings is featured on one of the blogs below, you’ll be credited with a link to your website.
If a potential bride wants to know more about your services, they’ll click the link. More clicks = more traffic to your website, leading to more exposure.
Pro Tip: If you’re running Facebook re-targeting ads, the additional traffic will also give a welcome boost to your custom audience size.
3. Personal Development
This might seem a little arbitrary, but the whole process of selecting images to submit to a wedding site can be beneficial to your own development as a photographer.
Too often, we deliver photos to our clients, then move on to the next wedding without a second thought on our overall performance as photographers. Sure, the client may be over the moon, but how do you actually feel about your work?
Scrutinizing your images to meet the strict editorial guidelines of a popular blog forces you to really consider your images in a new light. If you end up getting published, seeing your photos among those of other talented photographers can be great motivation to improve at your art.
4. Social Proof
Featuring the logos of popular wedding blogs on your homepage, social media, and even in your email signature can be hugely beneficial.
Wedding blogs happily supply ‘badges’ to photographers and vendors featured on their sites. Displaying these prominently in your branding will give potential brides reassurance about their decision, and can even add value to your services.
5. SEO
Let’s not beat about the bush here – getting a ‘backlink’ from any of the wedding blogs listed here can significantly help your SEO efforts.
Google has confirmed that backlinks are one of their top 3 ranking factors – it’s also commonly assumed that the more relevant links you can point to your website, the better your website will ‘rank’.
With all other factors being equal, the more powerful the wedding blog, the better the outcome… but how do we define how powerful the blog is?
What makes a Wedding Blog ‘Powerful’?
To be able to create a list of the best wedding blogs of the year, we need to establish a comparative metric – in this case, something called Domain Rating (DR).
Domain Rating is created by a tool called Ahrefs, that shows the strength of a target website’s total backlink profile (in terms of its size and quality).
Without delving in too deep to DR or Ahrefs, all you need to know is this:
The closer the Domain Rating figure in the table below is to 100, the ‘stronger’ the wedding website… and the more beneficial it will be for you to have your work published there.
The Ahrefs’ Organic Traffic metric is an estimate of monthly organic search traffic coming to a target website or URL.
Ahrefs uses its enormous database of search queries, combined with a ‘unique CTR curve’… plus several other black magic metrics to come to this estimation… but take the traffic figure with a grain of salt. It’s the DR of the website that you should pay most attention to.
How to get Published on a Wedding Site
Each wedding blog has strict editorial guidelines for getting your work featured as a ‘real wedding’, ‘engagement session’, or ‘styled shoot’ on their site.
Look for this information when clicking through to the sites below, and make sure you adhere to it strictly.
- Stick to the site specific submission guidelines to the T. This one’s essential, so read everything carefully!
- Remember portrait orientation (i.e. vertical) images in your submission too. Editors love these for use on Pinterest and other mobile-centric social platforms.
- If your work doesn’t get accepted by one blog further down the list, don’t assume ones further up won’t accept your submission either. Keep aiming high!
- Pay attention to the nature of the site. Do brides have tattoos? Are vintage weddings more common? Do your homework to make sure your images match the submission.
- Personalise your message to the editor – check the About Page for their name, and don’t make your submission sound like a canned email!
- Give your personal account of the shoot that adds a bit of colour to the submission – show some excitement!
- Provide a good mixture of detail shots, as well as a wide spectrum of the day (getting ready, ceremony, cocktail hour, first dance, cake cut, etc.)
- Remember the vendor credits. You should be asking your clients about their vendors in the pre-wedding questionnaire, to save you having to search for them later.
- Be kind to the editor! Remember that it’s a real person who’s reviewing your submission – a little respect and humility goes a long way ;-)
Obviously, your photos need to be great to be accepted by any of the websites listed here, but sticking to the tips above will vastly increase your chances of getting your work published.
Final Words of Advice
Getting your work featured on these wedding blogs can benefit your wedding photography business in several ways, in the short, medium and long term.
The beauty of SEO is that the benefits are compounding, and for the most part, passive… as long as you put in the effort to start with!
Having your work published on a popular wedding site is a much more time efficient way to promote your services than something transient like social media, which can seem like a constant uphill struggle at times…
