Hi there John! Thanks for the compliment on the article.
In regards to your question about fitting an a7 iii with a small lens, the body size of the a7 comes in to play here, I believe you will be able to just fit the body in without a lens attached.
The 3L is geared towards smaller cameras, like a6000 sized and point & shooters.
I think at minimum the 6L would be suited to your camera set up!
