I am currently a Cannon photographer. Been shooting since I was a kid in the 70’s. But have always had fixed lens. Was considering a Sony 6400 mirrorless, but after your review, I am not too sure. I love capturing the movement of nature and nature in general but I love far away and up close also. I view life through a lens… I am interested in the mirrorless and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I am wanting to spend around $1,300. New or used.

My current camera is a Canon SX50 HS.

It depends on your budget and needs, Elena. Any Alpha camera can shoot the stars well – it also depends a lot on lens choice too. You can google ‘Shotkit best Sony lenses for astrophotography’ for an article that should help, or join our private Facebook group and ask there (make sure to include some more information of your specific needs.)

I’m sitting on the fence while looks for a good family and travel camera. I was wondering what you thought about the X-S10 compared to the Sony a6400 for these purposes. The Sony AF is constantly raved about, but the X-S10 has IBIS and seems to get more favorable reviews from photographers or people who “know cameras”. Are the differences in AF something an amateur/novice father would really notice? Thanks for your help and the informative article!

I’ve found it to be perfectly responsive. But, it sounds like you were talking about navigating menus and such…which the touch screen doesn’t do at all (whether that’s a good or bad design choice is debatable, frankly I think the menu items are far too small to navigate by touch without it being annoying, but I can see why some would want that feature).
