How to use Lightroom Classic and Mylio Photos for seamless photo organization

One of the many interesting new features of the Mylio Photos management platform is that it comes with integration with Adobe Lightroom Classic.

This makes it very easy to use Mylio Photos with Lightroom to organize your images between the two systems seamlessly.

The main reason why you might want to use both of these software platforms together in this way is that while Lightroom Classic’s photo editing features are superb, the photo organization and filtering features of Mylio Photos are more powerful and intuitive.

Here we’re going to cover exactly how Mylio Photos lets you work with Lightroom Classic and how you can try them together for yourself.

Setting Up Editing with Lightroom Classic and Mylio Photos

The main benefit of integration between Lightroom Classic and Mylio Photos is that you can incorporate the latter as an external editor and companion to your existing Lightroom catalogue of photos.

Specifically, Mylio Photos is able to detect when you have Lightroom installed and then automatically install a plugin that lets you work with both platforms smoothly and easily.

The first part of doing this between the two software platforms starts with making sure that the Lightroom plugin is installed.

To do this, you first need to launch Lightroom Classic and once it’s open, navigate to its Library module. In this, there will be a menu item on the left side of the screen called “Publish Services”

Once you open this as a drop-down submenu, several options will appear, and Mylio Photos should be available among them.

Click on the Mylio Photos item where it says “Set Up”, and a Lightroom Publishing Manager window will appear.

In this window, again click on Mylio Photos along the left side and under the Publish Service settings that appear on the right, type “Export to Mylio Photos” (or some other name you choose) and click “Save”.

Doing the above will give you a shared Photostream option that will be visible under Mylio Photos under the Lightroom “Publish Services” option along the left of the Lightroom Library Module.

This is all you need to do to have Lightroom Classic and Mylio Photos integrated together. Now let’s cover the process of actually using both with a basic example.

Working with Both Mylio Photos and Lightroom Classic

Once your Lightroom Classic application and Mylio Photos platform are integrated together, using Lightroom seamlessly with Mylio Photos is pretty straightforward.

By being able to use the first platform for editing and the second platform for organizing and sharing your photos, you can obtain the best of both technologies with powerfully fast workflow results.

Importing from Mylio Photos into Lightroom Classic

To open and edit photos with Lightroom through Mylio Photos, you first need to have folders with photos already imported into the latter platform.

Once you have photo folders imported into Mylio, navigate to the folder you want to work with and select the folder or photos you’re interested in selecting for import to Lightroom.

You can also select specific selections of photos from a whole folder of images by using Mylio Photos’ “Flags” feature.

Flags let you cull out particular images and image types by flagging them as potential rejects. You can search for images to flag by your own previous tags, or by date range.

Once you’ve selected your images in the Mylio Photos software for editing with Lightroom, your next step will be to navigate to the “Photo” menu along the tabs at the top of the Mylio Photos interface.

Open it, and scroll down to “Open With”. Click on this and select “Lightroom Classic”.

Clicking this launches the Lightroom Import dialog box.

Here, your photos will appear and all you need to do is click “Add” along the top of the dialog box and then click “Import”.

There are also options for “Copy as DNG”, “Copy” and “Move” in the Lightroom Import dialog box.

However, we recommend simply clicking “Add” because it moves selected photos to your Lightroom Library without removing them from their original folders.

You can now edit your photos individually or in batches however you like through Lightroom’s “Develop” module.

A key thing to keep in mind once you’ve done your Lightroom edits is that the edits are stored inside Lightroom’s own proprietary databases and won’t automatically appear in the corresponding photos you imported from Mylio Photos.

In other words, you’ll have to export copies of your edited photos from Lightroom’s catalog to Mylio Photos for the edits to be visible on the latter platform. Doing this is really easy.

Exporting and syncing edited images from Lightroom to Mylio Photos

Simply drag your edited photo or photos to the Lightroom “Library” module in your Lightroom Classic application, scroll down to “Publish Services” and then click on Mylio Photos to open its “Photostream”. You can then drag your edited photos there.

Once you’ve dragged all the photos you edited into the Mylio Photos Photostream, simply click “Publish” to sync your edited versions into Mylio Photos.

Once you go back to Mylio Photos, a JPEG copy, called a Display Copy, of your edited Lightroom preview images will be stacked along with the untouched original version that you imported from Mylio Photos.

You can access its full version with all edits by opening Lightroom and finding the file inside your Mylio Photos Photostream under Publish Services.

In Mylio Photos’ “Info Panel” under the “File Name” field, you’ll be able to see which of your Mylio Photos Folder images have Display copies by looking at their file extensions and seeing  if they also include “dng.jpg.xmp.” or if you imported RAW photos to Lightroom, they might include your cameras file extension for RAW and then “jpg.jpg.”

Once a photo’s edited Display Copy from Lightroom is visible in your Mylio Photos folders, it will sync to all of your other devices that have Mylio Photos installed on them.
