Felicia Simion

I am 24-year-old photographer currently living in Romania. I pursued a BA in Photography at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, and also an MA in Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology and Folklore at the University of Bucharest. I have practiced photography and digital retouching since I was 13 – it all began as a dream to travel and experience various cultures (including my own) and see them through my own lens.
One of the greatest difficulties I have encountered in my work, which now I tend not to consider a difficulty anymore despite the rigors of the artistic world, was to focus on one particular genre. As I am attracted to words as well, photography somehow became a way of visual storytelling, and the stories I choose to tell vary, being shaped by the multiple aspects of life which I encounter. Sometimes I believe my photography is closer to poetry; other times I am attracted to documentary work – some would call it a “lyric” narration of real happenings. My camera is an extension of the sight, and through it, I embrace the vastness and the newness which describe day-to-day life.
As I am not a very technical photographer, my kit is pretty simple. I photographed my “shotkit” as I packed it for a trip to South America which is coming really soon.
I use a Canon 5D Mark III camera, together with three lenses which cover the broad area of my work: a Canon 50mm f/1.4
lens (usually for portraiture and documentary work), a recently bought Canon 17-40mm f/4L
lens (which helps a lot especially in my landscape+human figure photography) and a Canon 70-200mm f/4L
lens, mostly for landscape work. I am not a big fan of flash photography, which sometimes can be an inconvenient. Still, I try to “program” my projects in the outdoors when the natural light is best (usually at sunrise/sunset or after sunset) – see sunset photography guide.
Together with taking photos, in South America I am planning to keep a field journal (being engaged with Anthropology I tend to write more now) and also to make some videos – for this I will use either my Mark III on a tripod (Cullmann Alpha 2800
) or a Sony HDR-CX625 full HD camera, which I use rarely, but it comes handy for the trip.
I hope that my future travel will become a new project which will combine photography, video and words, thus “satisfying” my appetite for these three passions.
